The "850" is an area code that happens to cover one of the most varied coastlines in the United States — roughly 200 miles from Pensacola to Apalachicola, plus the inland capital at Tallahassee. Picking the right base matters more here than almost anywhere else in Florida.

## If you want the classic beach holiday Panama City Beach is the most straightforward choice: 27 miles of sand, high-rise condos with balconies over the Gulf, Pier Park for shopping and dinner, and every watersport you can think of within a short drive. It is the easiest place to keep a family entertained for a week without a plan.

## If you want small-town charm 30A and South Walton string sixteen distinct beach neighbourhoods along one scenic highway. Seaside, Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach each have their own character, and the rare coastal dune lakes behind the dunes exist in only a handful of places on earth. Bring a bike.

## If you want to fish Destin calls itself the world's luckiest fishing village and has the charter fleet to back it up. The deep-water pass right at the harbour means you reach blue water faster than anywhere else on the Gulf coast.

## If you want history Pensacola is the oldest European settlement site in the country, with 450 years of it packed into a walkable downtown. Add the National Naval Aviation Museum and Blue Angels practice shows and you have days of things to do before you touch the sand.

## If you want quiet Mexico Beach, Port St. Joe and Cape San Blas are the Forgotten Coast — no high-rises, no chains, and the kind of empty dunes that are increasingly hard to find. Apalachicola adds oyster houses and a historic district.

## A note on timing - March–May — warm water, fewer crowds, and festival season in full swing. - June–August — peak everything. Book early and plan indoor afternoons. - September–October — locals' favourite. Still swimmable, much quieter. - November–February — cool, cheap, and surprisingly good for food and art events.
