What we collect
Browsing Discover850 does not require an account and we do not ask for personal information to read the site. When you use one of our forms — submitting an event, contacting us, or enquiring about advertising — we store what you type so we can act on it, along with a one-way hash of your IP address used purely to rate-limit abuse. We do not store the address itself.
Newsletter
If you sign up for the monthly events email we store your address, the area you chose if you picked one, which page you signed up from, and the same one-way IP hash. That is all — we do not build a profile, and we never sell or share the list. Every email carries a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe at any time without signing in.
Maps, weather and beach conditions
Map tiles are served by OpenStreetMap, so your browser requests images from openstreetmap.org and that request carries your IP address as any web request does. Beach conditions are fetched by our server, not your browser — the National Weather Service, NOAA and the EPA never see you. Pressing Near me on the map asks your browser for your location; nothing is sent to us or stored, it only re-centres the map on your device.
Cookies
The public site sets no tracking cookies of its own. A single session cookie is set only for administrators who sign in to the content admin, and it is removed when they sign out.
Analytics
Analytics is currently switched off — no measurement script is loaded on this site. If we enable it in future we will use Google Analytics 4 with IP anonymisation and advertising signals switched off.
Third-party embeds
Our beach cameras are streamed by their own providers (IPCamLive, Angelcam, EarthCam and YouTube). Those streams load only after you press “Watch live”, so nothing is requested from a camera provider unless you choose to watch one. Once a stream loads, that provider’s own privacy policy applies. Where we embed YouTube we use its no-cookie domain.
Sponsored links
Paid placements are labelled “Sponsored”. Clicking one passes through our own site so we can count the click for reporting, then forwards you to the advertiser with UTM parameters attached. We record only the total number of impressions and clicks per campaign per day — nothing that identifies you.
